Global Infocity Park, Chennai (GIPC) is an IT hub situated in the Perungudi area in the southern part of Chennai city in Tamil Nadu, India. It has a plot area of more than 12.2 acres, which is a home to the offices of major business players in the country. The facility is predominantly observed to be conducive to retaining skilled, motivated professionals. This is owed to the fact that as a state-of-the-art facility, the buildings are integrally connected to their surroundings. Extensive green spaces, landscaped terraces, and courtyards have been created to ensure that the development has a tranquil, campus-like feel.
The construction of the campus was completed in 2017, and it has been operational ever since, typically used for office purposes, and is used by nearly 16,000 people regularly. The offices are operational for 5 days a week.
Global Infocity Park's Zero Waste Policy is founded on the principles of Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot (Compost). The policy is implemented through specific guidelines, such as the Office Printer and Printing Policy and the Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) Policy, reflecting GIPC's commitment to sustainability.
The policy was developed collaboratively:
1. Employees: They provided insights and feedback, helping to identify waste reduction opportunities and challenges. They implemented the 5Rs in daily operations and adopted new practices from specific policies.
2. Waste Management Agency: Their expertise informed effective waste management strategies. They coordinated waste segregation, recycling initiatives, and operated On-Site Organic Waste Converters (OWCs) to manage organic waste.
3. Sustainability Consultant: They guided the policy's development, aligning it with industry best practices and global sustainability standards to ensure practical and effective solutions.
Additionally, employee involvement and community engagement were promoted through events and activities, fostering a collective responsibility towards achieving zero-waste goals. These collaborative efforts led to the successful creation and implementation of GIPC's comprehensive Zero Waste Policy.
